Types of dermal fillers are injectable soft tissue fillers that are injected into the skin to provide volume to the skin. It fills in the skin to eliminate facial wrinkles, fine lines and enhance facial looks. These fillers help to restore a smoother and younger skin appearance. Results from dermal fillers can last up to 2 years or more.

Types of dermal fillers

There are different types of dermal fillers. These include:

Hyaluronic acid

Brand names include: Captique, Esthélis, Elevess, Hylaform, Juvederm, Perlane, Prevelle, Puragen, Restylane

Hyaluronic acid is a natural occurring substance that is found in the body. High concentrations of hyaluronic acid are found in the skin, soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding the eyes. It can also be found in some cartilage and joint fluids.  Hyaluronic acid attracts water and moisture in the body and helps to retain them in position. It helps to keep tissues well-lubricated and moist.

Hyaluronic acid can be extracted and reformulated to form injectable fillers. When injected into the skin, it restores volume to the area and fills in facial wrinkles to eliminate fine lines, improve the look of the skin, reduce skin depressions, improve skin contours and scars. It also boosts the skin’s ability to produce collagen.

You can see potentially dramatic improvements for:

  • Acne scars
  • Cheek depressions
  • Crow’s feet at the corner of your eyes
  • Deep smile lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Marionette lines
  • Redefining lip border
  • Scars caused by burns, acne and wounds
  • Smoker’s lines; vertical lines on the mouth
  • Some facial scars
  • Worry lines that run across your forehead

Calcium hydroxylapatite

Brand names include: Radiesse

Calcium hydroxylapatite is naturally found in human bones and teeth. It is a mineral-like compound that is biosynthetically produced. This means that it is not produced with animals or animal products. This helps to lower your risk of an allergic reaction. It stimulates the natural production of collagen.

When this filler is injected, it immediately replenishes lost volume, the gel is absorbed into the body over a period of time. The body then metabolizes the calcium, leaving behind your own collagen.

Calcium hydroxyapatite is known to produce natural results, doesn’t migrate and with rare side effects. It is safe for use and long-lasting.

It can be used to:

  • Treat moderate-to-severe creases such as nasolabial folds, and frown lines
  • Enhance the cheeks and other facial contours
  • Improve volume in areas of facial loss that can occur in HIV-positive people taking certain medications

Polylactic acid

Brand names include: Sculptra

Polylactic acid is a synthetic dermal filler that stimulates the production of collagen in the body. Collagen is the most prevalent protein in the skin. It is a primary component of connective tissue and helps keep the skin firm and tight. It provides the elasticity that prevents wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. It makes the skin to keep looking fresh and young.

Polylactic acid dermal filler is known as a stimulator. It does not produce immediate results when injected into the skin. Results gradually appear over a period of four to six weeks. You may need to undergo repeated treatments 3 times in a month to achieve your desired results.

Results from polylactic acid dermal fillers can last up to 2 years. It is used to:

  • Fill the lines caused by laughing
  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance or eliminate deep nasolabial folds

Polyalkylimide

Brand names include: Aquamid

Polyalkylimide is a semi-permanent dermal filler used to treat deeper wrinkles and scars. It is radio transparent and has very little reaction with human tissue.

When it is injected, a thin layer of collagen slowly forms around the treatment area over the course of a month. A large volume can be injected during a single procedure.

It is used to:

  • Treat deeper wrinkles such as nasolabial folds or depressed scars
  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance cheekbones and the jawline and replace facial volume lost due to aging.
  • Treat facial loss from HIV medications

Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA)

Brand names include: Bellafill

Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres is a semi-permanent filler that is commonly used to treat medium-to-deep wrinkles, folds and furrows. It can also be used to fill out deep scars and to augment thin lips.

PMMA is most often used instead of collagen replacement therapy or hyaluronic therapy when a more permanent solution to facial wrinkles is desired.

During treatment, a number of PMMA injections are needed to create volume and it may take up to three months to get full effects of the treatment. PMMA injection may also be visible under the skin. It has a higher risk and complications, which is why your cosmetic or plastic surgeon needs to fully understand and be familiar with the proper and safer technique for the treatment.

Results of PMMA treatment can last up to five years or more.
